Systems accumulate the cruft of software installed, removed, modified, and the junk you can pick up from the hardware vendor or by "drive-by" web browsing. For more serious tools, see the page for hosed-up systems cited above. To help you avoid this crap in the first place, we have these tools:

• Manage Windows Crapware:

• pc Decrapifier removes preinstalled junk your computer manufacturer pushed on you.
• CCleaner is a privacy tool as well as a junkware remover.
• "Malware" includes spyware, viruses, trojans, and others. Good protection includes:
• MalwareBytes is a real-time monitor and malware shield.
• Spybot Search and Destroy is a good, freeware, spyware scanner. Note: there have been problems reported with old copies of SS&D and new definition files of 6/25/08. Use the most current version.
• AdAware, the first such tool. There is still a free version.
• Windows Clean Up! removes temp files, deleted files, and overall clutter.

Antivirus Tools

• AVG Antivirus, the free version
• Avast! Home Edition, another free for individual use.
• Trend Micro's Housecall Utility or their Sysclean Utility.
  Get their latest "LPT" Virus Definition File
• McAfee's FreeScan Utility will also do a quick check of your system.
• Clam AV is available in Linux, BSD, Windows, and Mac OS X flavors.
• And of course, your school may well have a site license for antivirus for your system. If you are having problems removing your antivirus in order to install a new one, try these utilities:
• Norton Removal Tool, the official version.
• SCSCleanWipe, an alternative, unsupported Norton remover for stubborn cases. Warning: it will remove all Norton products, not just your antivirus!
• McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool for removing that company's products.
